The Charter Revision Commission's recommendation to merge the Zoning and Planning Commission to one appointed body to create a Planning and Zoning Commission was successfully passed at the November 4, 2025 election.  The Planning and Zoning Commission shall consist of 7 regular members and 3 alternates. This will become effective January 1, 2026.

The Planning and Zoning Commission endeavors to provide for and facilitate the orderly growth and expansion of the municipality in accordance with the Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD).  

Among the statutory responsibilities of the Planning and Zoning Commission are to enact and administer the Town’s Zoning Regulations which have been established to preserve the quality of life in Somers, and to protect the Town’s rural character while acknowledging that the Town continues to develop as a highly attractive community in which to work and live.  The Planning and Zoning Commission reviews and approves all applications for Special Use Permits, Site Plans, and Zoning Regulation and Map amendments. The Commission is also responsible for the review and approval of subdivisions and reconfigurations of property.
