Absentee Ballot Guidelines for Referendum & Sample Referendum Ballot

Date, Time and Location

The Budget Referendum will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.  All voting will be conducted at the Town Hall Auditorium during the hours of 6:00 am and 8:00 pm.  Please be prepared to present proper identification such as a Driver’s License.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee Ballots are available in the Town Clerk’s Office beginning May 7, 2025 for the 2025-2026 Budget Referendum.  Absentee ballots for a referendum can only be issued to individuals applying in person to the Town Clerk’s Office.  Absentee Ballots will not be mailed.

Eligibility to Vote

Any person who is an elector of the Town of Somers may vote and any United States citizen eighteen years or more who, jointly or severally, is liable to the Town of Somers for taxes assessed against him/her on an assessment of not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) on the last completed Grand List of such Town.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by First Selectmen Tim Keeney with 25 individuals in attendance. The Town Clerk was requested to read the legal notice. Legal Notice below was read.

Notice is hereby given that the Annual Town Meeting to act on the following items will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 7:00pm in the Town Hall Auditorium.
1. To elect a moderator.
2. Consider the annual budget for fiscal year 2025/2026 as proposed by the Board of Finance, consisting of total revenues and expenditures of $41,816,120
3. To set the date, time and place for a referendum by optical scan voting on the question of adopting the annual budget as proposed, selectmen recommending the referendum be conducted on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, between the hours of 6:00am and 8:00pm, at the Town Hall Auditorium.

1. Elect a moderator
A motion was made by Bill Meier to appoint Tim Keeney as Moderator and seconded by Bob Schmidt. First Selectmen Keeney asked for any other nominations. With no further nominations closing, the nomination process was voted on with all in favor.
2. Consider annual budget for fiscal year 2025-2026 as proposed by the Board of Finance, consisting of $41,816,120 in revenues and expenditures
The motion was made by Joe Tolisano and seconded by Bill Meier, and moderator Keeney opened the floor for discussion. He explained the rules by Charter that only line items in the budget can be adjusted. The floor was open for discussion.
Janet Warnock from 80 Maple Street addressed the room. Janet stated that she and many other seniors in Somers are concerned about the budget increase, especially with the property revaluation happening. Janet asked that local government need to do everything to limit increasing budgets and proposed that income limits to receive tax reductions should increase so more seniors can qualify. Janet shared that she and many other seniors in town are afraid that in the future they will not be able to afford to live in Somers. First Selectmen Keeney thanked her for her comments.
Discussion session was closed and Tim asked that we vote on the motion. Everyone voted to accept.
3. Set the date, time and place of a referendum vote by optical scan recommending Tuesday, May 20, 2025 between the hours of 6:00 am and 8:00 pm at the Somers Town Hall Auditorium
Motion was made by Joe Tolisano and seconded by Bill Meier and unanimously voted to conduct a referendum vote on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at the Town Hall Auditorium from 6:00 am – 8:00 pm
Motion was made by Bill Meier to Close the meeting and seconded by Joe Tolisano. Meeting adjourned at 7:08.

Trailblazing Veteran Leader to Speak at Somers Memorial Day Veterans Coffee House on Saturday, May 31, 2025, 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM – Somers Town Hall Auditorium, 600 Main Street (Rt 190), Somers, CT.

Join us for a powerful morning of reflection, honor, and inspiration as we welcome a trailblazing veteran leader, Brigadier General Lesbia Nieves, former Director of the Veterans Residential Facility in Rocky Hill, and current Manchester Veterans Advisory Board member. A recent inductee into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2024, she will share her journey of service, leadership, and advocacy.

8:00 AM – Doors Open: Complimentary coffee and camaraderie
9:00 AM – Pledge of Allegiance/Moment of Silence, Opening Remarks, Announcements, Introduction of Guest Speaker – Brigadier General Nieves
9:15 AM – Brigadier General Nieves’ Memorial Day Presentation + Q&A
Her story of resilience and continued service is sure to inspire and remind us of the strength and sacrifice of our veteran community.

*Following the Q&A, attendees will have an opportunity to reflect on honoring fallen heroes and how their legacy is preserved.

All veterans, family members, and community members are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public.

The Somers Veterans Coffee House is a community event hosted monthly by the Somers Department of Veterans Affairs to connect veterans with services, support, and one another in a welcoming, informal setting.

Town-Wide Tag Sale returns Saturday, May 3

Rain or Shine

The first Saturday in May and October are designated as Town Wide Tag Sale days.  On these two days each year the $5 per day tag sale permit fee will be waived.  The Spring event will take place on May 3rd, and the Fall event will be on October 4th.

Here are the links for the Town Wide Tag Sale Application .  Be sure to send in your application.  Deadline for entry is Wednesday April 30th.

Submit the completed application to the Town Clerk’s Office by email ([email protected]), Drop Box outside entry to Town Hall, USPS or bring into Town Clerk’s Office.

A confirmation email will be sent acknowledging the receipt of your application for participation in the Somers Town-Wide ‘Spring’ Tag Sale. Listing of all locations will be posted on the town’s website on Thursday May 1st.

PUBLIC HEARING- TOWN OF SOMERS CHARTER REVISION COMMISSION

The Somers Charter Revision Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at 6:00pm in the Somers Town Hall Auditorium, 600 Main Street, Somers, CT to receive public comments on the following Resolution:

1. Shall the Town Clerk become an appointed rather than an elected position?
2. Shall the Board of Selectmen appoint a Town Administrator who reports to them and oversees day-to-day operations of the Town?
3. Shall the Zoning and Planning Boards be combined into a single appointed body?

Said proposed Resolution is on file in the Town Clerk’s office of the Town of Somers, Somers Town Halll. At this hearing, interested persons may be heard and written communications may be sent to [email protected]

The Assessor’s Office is preparing for the 2025 real estate revaluation.  For more details on the revaluation process click on the headline above.  It is important to keep in mind that whenever property is revalued, there is generally a change in the town’s mill (tax) rate.
