The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to improve the intersection of Route 190 and Route 83 in Somers.
The project involves realigning the southern approach of Route 83 (South Road) with the northern approach (Springfield Road) and installing a modern roundabout.
The purpose of this project is to improve traffic flow, improve safety for all users, and enable large vehicles to better navigate the intersection. Historically, the offset nature of the Route 83 approaches at this intersection (approximately 80 feet) has led to a high rate of crashes and long queues. In October 2019, CTDOT installed a new traffic signal, which split the north and south movements into separate phases meant to address these issues. However, this solution led to a significant increase in traffic delays and queues during peak hours and did not improve truck turning movements. This project proposes to reduce the present congestion and improve safety by realigning the northbound approach and installing a modern roundabout. Pedestrian improvements, including sidewalks and crosswalks, will also be provided to improve connectivity and safety through Somers Center.
The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in May 2028, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2029, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) Federal funds and twenty percent (20%) State funds.
It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development
